How To Cook Scrumptious Lentils

How To Cook Scrumptious Lentils

The tasty and protein-filled lentil can be prepared and enjoyed in a variety of ways. Bring goodness and a rich, nutty flavour to your next meal with our simple lentil recipe on preparing lentils.

Cooking Instructions:

Lentils are simple to prepare. Pre-soak your lentils before boiling in water with Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot, keep to a 3 to 1 ratio of water to lentils. Whole lentils take between 15 to 20 minutes to cook while split lentils only take about 5 to 7 minutes before they’re done.

Cooking times of lentils also depend on the variety. Green lentils usually take 30 minutes, while red ones require 20 minutes. Add your lentils to rapidly boiling water rather than bringing them to boil with the water.

This will ensure the lentils are digested with ease. If you desire a firmer texture, remove your lentils approximately 5-10 minutes earlier than their usual cooking time. If you will be using your lentils to make a dhal or any other dish that requires a mushier consistency, add an extra 10-15 minutes to your cooking time.

Green lentils keep their shape and texture after cooking and are often served with fish or roasted vegetables. Red and yellow lentils dissolve into a rich purée, and are delicious mixed into stews, curries, soups or veggie burgers.

Cooked lentils are also delectable in a cold salad when tossed together with chopped sweet peppers, herbs and spices. Lentils are also fabulous with buckwheat soba noodles, small broccoli florets and leeks, dressed with a mix of olive oil, garlic and ginger. Moroccan lentil soup is another lentil classic! Prepare your lentils, add diced vegetables and season with soy sauce, coriander, cumin, turmeric and cayenne…delish!

Lentils can easily be sourced both in modern stores (Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Food Lovers Market) and traditional trade markets (Taxi ranks /street vendors). And can be bought in both tinned or dry formats.
