Mushrooms An Underrated Superfood

Mushrooms An Underrated Superfood

Oh, the humble mushroom, how vast it's potential.

Scientists believe that mushrooms have flourished on earth for over a billion years, stating that cultures from around the world have eaten and consumed mushrooms medicinally for centuries, dating even as far back as ancient Egypt.

Rumour has it, pharaohs loved the signature earthy flavours of mushrooms so much that they declared the fungi a royal food, forbidding non-royals from even touching them. No surprise to us, given the delicious depth of flavour, unique meaty taste and amazing nutritional benefits that mushrooms have!

With over 2000 edible varieties, mushrooms are packed full of nutrients and are said to be a valuable source of protein, B vitamins, Vitamin D and fiber. Mushrooms are also said to have water content over 90 per cent, making them great for adding to stews, soups and salads to help us feel fuller without increasing the calories of our meals.

With all these amazing benefits, it’s no wonder the deceivingly plain mushroom has in recent times been dubbed a ‘superfood’ by nutritionists!
