Quality Time in the Garden
Get the whole family in the garden for some Spring fun! The kids will love getting their little fingers and toes in the soil, and they can learn more about how to grow their own vegetables or fruit in time for summer. We have 3 gardening tips to help inspire family gardening fun.
In order to be a great ‘green fingers’ all year round, one needs to understand the seasons as well as learn about the best conditions to grow whatever it is that you have decided to plant. Gardening is a fantastic little task for children as it teaches them commitment to a fun project, and it gets them outdoors in a ‘hands on’ environment.
Tip No. 1: Childproof Gardening Tools
It’s a great idea to get children more connected to nature, but make sure you have the right tools to avoid any unnecessary tears! Curious by nature, kids want to get involved and they can do this with plastic gardening tools (if quite young), or smaller metal trowels if a bit older. Work gloves are a great idea to protect their hands and keep them clean.
Tip No. 2: Their Own Garden Beds
Make it a bit easier for their gardening beds to succeed and place them in the best sun or light. Smaller children need small garden beds, while older kids can handle a larger bed (and plant more things). As your bed you can use old wooden boxes, ceramic pots or, if you’re feeling crafty, you can build a raised gardening bed.
Tip No. 3: Gardening Gear
Old aprons and old clothes make great gardening outfits for aspiring little landscapers. Gumboots and sun hats are also essentials to keep your carpets dirt-free and your kids safe from the sun. Get a basket that you can fill with their gardening wear, so that you can easily throw the pile in the machine when you’ve finished gardening for the day.
